Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize patient care by improving diagnostics, personalizing treatment plans, and enhancing operational efficiencies in healthcare settings. However, several challenges must be addressed to fully realize its benefits. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search using electronic databases and hand reference checks. The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CINHAL, EMBASE, Scopus and web of science were searched from March 2010 until December 2024. All terms related to The challenges of artificial intelligence in nursing care were used to conduct the search. We adopted a checklist from the critical appraisal skills program checklist for diagnostic studies to assess the quality of the included studies. Results: We identified 3263 records, of which 496 were selected for full-text review. Following methodological examination and quality assessment, 46 studies were included in narrative data synthesis. The most frequently key factors in the challenges of artificial intelligence in nursing care included: Data Privacy and Security(Patient Confidentiality, Cybersecurity Risks), Data Quality and Availability(Inconsistent Data, Data Silos), Bias and Fairness(Algorithmic Bias, Equity in Healthcare), Integration with Existing Systems(Interoperability, Workflow Disruption), Regulatory and Legal Issues(Lack of Clear Regulations, Liability Concerns), Clinical Validation and Trust(Need for Clinical Validation, Trust from Healthcare Professionals), Patient Engagement and Understanding(Patient Acceptance, Informed Consent), Cost and Resource Allocation(High Implementation Costs, Resource Allocation), Ethical Considerations(Decision-Making Autonomy, Transparency and Explainability). Conclusions: While AI holds great promise for improving patient care, addressing these challenges is essential for successful implementation. Collaboration among healthcare providers, technology developers, policymakers, and patients will be crucial in navigating these issues and ensuring that AI enhances rather than hinders the quality of care provided to patients.
