Background and Aims: Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly utilized in healthcare, offering innovative solutions to complex clinical challenges. In dentistry, AI has the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve treatment planning. Among its most significant applications are the detection and management of periodontal disease and dental caries, which are two major concerns in oral health. Periodontal disease affects the gums and the bone supporting the teeth, leading to tooth loss in severe cases. Dental caries, a progressive condition causing tooth decay, also requires early detection to prevent extensive damage. This study aims to explore the role of AI in these conditions and assess its potential for improving dental care. Method: This review examines the evolution of AI in dental medicine, highlighting its contributions to modern dentistry. Key AI models, including artificial neural networks (ANNs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and the random forest algorithm, are discussed. Additionally, AI applications in periodontology, cariology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics are analyzed, focusing on their ability to classify periodontal conditions, detect bone loss, and assess disease severity. Results: AI technologies have demonstrated significant potential in analyzing dental images, identifying early signs of periodontal disease and caries, and assisting in diagnostic and treatment planning. These advancements can improve accuracy, reduce human error, and enhance overall patient outcomes. However, despite these benefits, AI adoption in dentistry remains limited due to challenges related to integration, cost, and the need for extensive validation. Conclusion: AI has the potential to revolutionize dental healthcare by improving diagnosis and treatment strategies. However, further research and technological advancements are required to overcome existing barriers to implementation. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for AI to become a standard tool in dentistry, ensuring more precise and efficient patient care.
