Background and aims: The application of virtual reality (VR) in medical settings has gained substantial attention, particularly for its potential in managing pain during emergency interventions. The aim of this study, explores the role of VR in alleviating pain during emergency procedures. Method: A systematic review was conducted, focusing on studies published between 2010 and 2024, assessing the use of VR for pain relief in emergency interventions. Sources were identified through databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using keywords like “virtual reality,” “pain management,” “emergency interventions,” and “acute pain.” Selected articles were critically appraised for study design, sample size, VR interventions used, and the outcomes measured. A synthesis of quantitative and qualitative data was performed to draw comprehensive conclusions. Results: A total of 1252 records were identified from databases. Among them, 38 records underwent eligibility screening. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 studies were deemed eligible and included in this review. Results shown that The use of virtual reality (VR) has been shown to effectively reduce pain intensity in emergency situations, particularly in burn care and dressing changes. VR works by diverting attention, reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting relaxation, which leads to a decrease in pain perception. It has demonstrated significant benefits in both adults and children in terms of reducing pain and anxiety. Among various VR applications, interactive experiences and guided games have been more effective in pain reduction compared to passive VR experiences. Conclusion: Virtual reality has emerged as a promising tool for managing pain in emergency interventions. Its ability to provide effective pain relief without the side effects of pharmacological treatments makes it an appealing option in clinical practice. However, further research is needed to optimize VR protocols and fully understand its mechanisms.
