Background and Aim: Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have revolutionized education and research by enabling rapid information access, personalized learning, and streamlined research processes. While AI offers significant benefits as an educational assistant for content design, feedback provision, and student assessment, concerns persist regarding diminished critical thinking skills, technological over-reliance, and misinformation. In research, AI aids data analysis and innovation but raises ethical issues including privacy violations, algorithmic biases, and citation transparency. This review examines AI's dual impact, analyzing its advantages, limitations, and ethical dilemmas while proposing strategies for responsible academic integration. Methods and Materials: We systematically reviewed studies from Persian (SID, Civilica, Magiran) and international databases (PubMed, ISI, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar) using keywords: "Artificial Intelligence","ChatGPT", "Ethical Challenges", "Professional Decision-Making" and "nursing students" (2016-2025). Inclusion criteria prioritized peer-reviewed articles with full-text availability and direct relevance to AI's academic applications. Results: Findings demonstrate AI's dual role in education and research. While enhancing efficiency and personalization, AI risks undermining critical thinking and fostering dependency. Comparative studies show ChatGPT improves time management but underperforms in developing clinical reasoning and ethical analysis skills. In research, AI facilitates data processing but faces reliability challenges including content inaccuracies and opaque sourcing. Newer models (e.g., GPT-4) show progress yet require human oversight. Recommended solutions include: hybrid learning models, transparent ethical guidelines, AI-content detection systems, and diversified assessment methods (practical projects and oral presentations). Conclusion: AI presents transformative opportunities alongside significant ethical and pedagogical challenges. Successful integration requires balancing technological benefits with educational integrity through revised teaching methodologies, evaluation standards, and ethical policies. Future implementation should emphasize human-AI collaboration, with AI serving as a complement to professional expertise rather than a replacement. Achieving this balance demands coordinated efforts among educators, policymakers, and technology developers.
