Background and aims: Healthcare remains a primary and significant concern for nations worldwide. The healthcare domain encompasses areas such as medical education, patient care, hospital operations, data management, doctors' office management, and research in medical care. Addressing the lack of specialized medical personnel, reducing treatment and consultation costs, facilitating the medical education process, and so on has led to the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Large language models (LLM), including ChatGPT, are generative artificial intelligence models that can produce relevant content based on their training data. Recent researches demonstrate the widespread use of this technology in the healthcare field. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the capabilities and performance of large language models (LLM) in transforming medical education, medical consultations (especially in the field of mental health disorders, including depression), and the development of medical question-and-answer systems. Method: Generally, the approaches to customizing large language models (LLM) fall into four categories: Prompt Engineering, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), Fine-tuning, and Agentic Augmentation. Each approach offers various information retrieval capabilities for the large language model (LLM), which are examined in this study. Results: Reviewing numerous articles reveals that the application of large language models (LLM) and efforts to customize them can significantly impact healthcare delivery improvement. However, challenges such as data quality, adherence to ethical considerations, and implementation costs persist. These challenges can lead to negative consequences in the healthcare field. Conclusion: A review of various studies indicates that integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with healthcare, combined with a focus on the customization of AI tools, promises a bright future in medical care. This would enable every patient to benefit from the best possible health, treatment, and consultation services regardless of income level, culture, or geographic location.
