Abstract

Background and aims: Today, artificial intelligence has made significant advancements in disease prevention. One of its most important applications is preventing diseases, which subsequently avoids the economic and physical costs for the patient. Considering that pressure ulcers are a significant complication in hospitalized patients, we decided to investigate the role of artificial intelligence in pressure ulcer prevention, based on previous research. Method: This review study identified 7 articles relevant to the objective through searches in Google Scholar and PubMed databases, considering a time limitation (2019-2024). The articles were reviewed in three stages: title screening, abstract review, and full-text review, and irrelevant articles were excluded. Results: Today, artificial intelligence-based mattresses, with their specific algorithms and data, can effectively prevent pressure ulcers. This data source includes information such as the moisture level of the mattress, the amount of pressure applied to the skin, the amount of surface area in contact with the skin, and the temperature between the skin surface and the mattress. The mechanism of these mattresses involves providing thermal images of the temperature of different points of the body, creating airflow between the empty spaces in the mattress, creating a wave-like motion in the mattress, and also reducing pressure on specific points by analyzing the amount of pressure exerted on different areas of the body. Advantages of this technology include reducing pressure on the skin, reducing moisture and perspiration on the mattress, increasing ventilation and air circulation, and accelerating disease recovery. Conclusion: The use of artificial intelligence can provide a suitable platform for the prevention of pressure ulcers, including early identification of risk factors, provision of personalized care for each patient, and the development of advanced equipment. The innovative new equipment currently being developed will likely focus on developing more advanced artificial intelligence algorithms and more innovative equipment. Given the novel innovations and ideas currently being developed in this field, they offer promise for a bright future.
