Background and aims: Robotic technology has made remarkable advancements in recent years, continuously expanding its role in advanced surgeries, particularly in neurosurgery. One of the most significant applications of this technology is in spinal surgery, where high precision and maintaining the stability of the spinal structure are essential. Accordingly, this study aims to explore the applications and challenges of robotic technology in spinal surgery. Method: This is a review study aimed at examining the applications and challenges of robotic technology in neurosurgery. To achieve this, articles were searched in various databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, using relevant keywords such as Artificial Intelligence, Neurosurgery, and Machine Learning from 2019 to the present. Based on predefined criteria, abstracts and full texts of the articles were reviewed, and ultimately, 6 articles were selected from the 37 identified. Results: Studies show that robotic technology in neurosurgery, particularly in spinal surgery, has made significant advancements. This technology reduces the need for reoperations by increasing precision in implant placement and minimizing human error. The combination of artificial intelligence with robotic surgery enables the correction of the surgeon's movements and provides optimal recommendations, facilitating the surgical process. These advancements contribute to improved outcomes and enhanced patient safety. However, this technology faces challenges such as high implementation costs, the need for specialized training for surgeons, coordination with human skills, and precision in implant placement, all of which need to be addressed. Conclusion: The results of studies show that robotic technology can be effectively utilized in neurosurgery, particularly in spinal surgery. This technology has already proven to be a safe tool in spinal surgery, benefiting both patients by increasing the precision of implant placement and the surgical team by reducing radiation exposure. Despite the challenges, the growing trend of robotic technology in neurosurgery suggests that it has the potential to establish a new standard for complex spinal surgeries and shape a new future for neurosurgery.
