Background and aims: In the twentieth century, infectious diseases accounted for the highest number of premature deaths and disabilities worldwide. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are the most dangerous adverse effects occurring during patient care . Operating rooms and special units represent some of the most critical care areas in any hospital, facing numerous challenges in maintaining hygiene. Despite extensive training on hand hygiene and adherence to sanitary techniques, we continue to witness preventable errors in patient care. The fear of transmitting infectious diseases has prompted authorities to adopt artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in healthcare. Method: This study was a narrative review that was performed during 2019-2025 through searching electronic databases (Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scopus) with the keywords Artificial Intelligence, Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit, Infection, Prevention, Hygiene. Results: Of the 55 articles initially identified, 20 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. All included studies were either randomized clinical trials or descriptive and prospective. studies that artificial intelligence can be utilized to identify the source of infections. The research has focused on using sensors that monitor adherence to hand hygiene techniques and sensors that ensure proper mask-wearing. Additionally, smart operating rooms equipped with temperature and humidity contro0l systems and proper procedures for disinfecting tools and personal protective equipment have been developed. Analyzing data related to patients' temperature and blood oxygen levels has proven effective in the early detection of patients suspected of infection. Furthermore, in addition to preventing the transmission of infections, it can help avoid the overuse of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance through clinical data from patients in specialized units. Conclusion: The use of recent technologies designed based on artificial intelligence significantly leads to a reduction in the incidence of infections in intensive care units and operating rooms, which in turn results in a decreased length of hospital stay and healthcare costs. Although the acquisition of these tools and modern technologies requires financial investment, the long-term positive effects justify the expense.
