Abstract
Background and aims: The use of the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased exponentially in recent years, bringing with it growing cybersecurity concerns. This review aims to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance cybersecurity in IoT systems. Method: Relevant studies were retrieved from authoritative scientific databases, including Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, on January 10, 2025. Additionally, a gray literature search was conducted using Google to identify the most recent evidence. Studies addressing the challenges and opportunities of using AI to improve cybersecurity in IoT were included based on predefined inclusion criteria. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Randomized Controlled Trials, which was also utilized for data extraction. Results: Initially, 685 studies were retrieved from the databases. After applying the inclusion criteria, 8 studies were selected for review. The pervasive nature of cyberattacks, combined with the limited processing power of many IoT devices and the heterogeneity of data generated, poses significant challenges in implementing robust security mechanisms. These constraints highlight one of the primary obstacles in securing IoT environments. However, AI-based solutions, such as machine learning algorithms, offer the potential to identify abnormal patterns and automatically apply security configurations to IoT devices. Furthermore, AI can enhance authentication systems by leveraging biometric techniques and behavioral analysis while also analyzing historical data to provide proactive risk mitigation recommendations. Conclusion: Given the extensive attack surfaces inherent to IoT systems, ensuring their protection against diverse cyber threats is imperative. Despite the numerous challenges, AI emerges as a powerful tool to strengthen cybersecurity in IoT environments by addressing vulnerabilities and optimizing security mechanisms.
