Abstract
Background and aims: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a growing phenomenon that will soon bring widespread changes to many professions, particularly medical education. AI capabilities have the potential to transform the process of medical education, making it essential for professionals in this field to assess its impact. This study aims to review and analyze articles that discuss learning and medical education through AI. Methods: A search for articles was conducted in the databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Only English-language articles published between 2019 and 2024 were included. Articles were screened based on inclusion criteria, and data were extracted and then coded. To assess the quality of qualitative studies, the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist was used. Results: The search strategy in the selected databases yielded 256 articles. After title screening, 199 articles were excluded, and following a full-text review, 42 more articles were removed from the study. Based on quality assessment, only articles with a quality score above 5 were included in the review, resulting in 6 selected articles. The review indicated that AI applications in medical education include preparing for medical exams, providing access to large sample sizes and simulated cases for training, and assisting health researchers in conducting studies. However, concerns were raised regarding the unethical use of AI, reduced interaction between learners and real patients, and difficulties in verifying the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information. Conclusion: AI has significant potential in medical education, paving the way for new learning experiences. However, it is crucial to closely monitor the learning process in this field to prevent misuse and address the associated challenges effectively.
